October 1, 2026
On the first Saturday of October, Lafayette stops being a town with a downtown and becomes, for about fourteen hours, a town that is entirely downtown. Bands are playing at Nissi's Entertainment and Events. Bands are playing at The Arts Hub. Bands are playing at The End Lafayette and at Muse Performance Space. The Lafayette Music Fest puts more than 200 Colorado-based acts across eight stages in one day, and the whole point is that no single address holds the event. You have to move to catch it.
Three weeks later, the opposite happens. By Halloween, the month has folded itself back down to a few blocks of Public Road, and the biggest gathering left on the calendar is a costumed pet parade.
That swing, from every corner of town to one street, is the actual shape of October here. It is not a slow build to a finale. It front-loads the sprawl and spends the rest of the month narrowing.
The Lafayette Music Fest lands on Saturday, October 3, running from 10 a.m. into the night. The festival's own pitch is that the town's music scene is whoever shows up to play, and the structure backs that up: eight stages, spread across small independent venues rather than one park or one fairground. A VIP wristband gets you preferred seating at Nissi's plus a drink at three other stops, The Arts Hub, The End Lafayette, and Muse Performance Space, which only makes sense if the festival assumes you'll be walking between all of them anyway.
Most small-town festivals pick a green space and build a stage. Lafayette Music Fest picks the town.
Once that Saturday passes, October settles into something much more contained. The Sunday farmers market on Public Road, which runs with more than 70 Colorado producers from May through October, is in its final weeks of the season. The stretch of Old Town it occupies has seen some real turnover this year. Remi's Cajun and Creole Cafe opened on North Public Road in 2026, bringing Louisiana-style cooking to a corridor better known for breweries and coffee shops. That same stretch lost a business too: the Sanitas Brewing taproom on Public Road closed for good in December, one of three locations the Boulder-based brewery shut down within days of each other as it wound down operations.
One block, one door closing and another opening, and a market packing up its tents for the winter. None of it requires you to leave Public Road.
Coloween falls on Monday, October 26, at Bounce Empire, 1380 South Public Road, an hour later than most Halloween events start and running until 3 a.m. It's a 21-and-over party, costumes required, tickets priced at $79. Like Remi's and the farmers market, it sits on Public Road, which means that by the last full week of October, three of the month's fixed points, the market, the new restaurant, and the adult costume party, all live within walking distance of each other.
Halloween itself belongs to the Fall Harvest Festival, and it's the clearest contrast to Music Fest on the calendar. Where October 3 sends people out across eight stages, October 31 asks them to come to one spot: a marketplace of vendors selling honey, salsas, chocolate, breads, and pastries alongside a food court and a petting zoo. Families pick out pumpkins, kids and adults alike show up in costume, and at 11 a.m. there's a parade for pets in costume that raises money for RezDawg.
It's a smaller event than the music festival in almost every way except one. It's the one day in October where the whole town's attention sits in the same place at the same time.
If you're trying to figure out which weekend to build plans around, that distinction matters more than it looks. October 3 requires a plan with stops built in. October 31 requires showing up once and staying put.
Whether you're settled into a house near Old Town or thinking about what it would take to be walking distance from all of this next October, Bethany Sartell knows this stretch of Public Road as well as anyone selling real estate in Boulder County.
